No doubt carpets have a primary role in interior decoration of home or office, but carpets especially handmade carpets are harder to clean. To preserve hand made carpets for long time, cleanliness is a must. There is no hard & fast rule regarding cleaning technique or cleaning duration, it depends upon the usage, environment, location etc. There are many professional cleaning technique .However the following advice and information are basic general instruction that the average home owner may exercise in the care and cleaning of handmade carpets.

Carpets stained by spilled drinks/liquids and carpets have great tendency to collect fur from family pets. Periodically vacuumed in order to prevent the accumulation of dust.

Regular brushing is a must, use carpet brush with natural bristles or with electric carpet sweeper.

Brush the underlay of the carpet and the floor as well.

Regular use of vacuum cleaner will eventually start to loosen the knots and pull the fibers out of the pile. Use vacuum cleaner periodically, once in a month (Recommended).

Never use the revolving brush attachment on a carpet for it will actually pull the fibers apart.

Nozzle attachment is recommended and may be used once a month.

Periodically flip the rugs so there will be even distribution of fading and wear on both sides.

Inspect the rugs periodically for insect damage like beetles, destructive insects etc especially in case of handmade carpets.

Immediately clean spilled liquids or any thing which may stain. The quicker the cleanup, the less likely that your rug will sustain permanent staining.

Take care of your carpets for Chewing gum / Bubble gum.

Keep away carpets from wetness, rain, dampness etc. In case carpet gets wet, try to dry it as soon as possible.

Use services of specialist carpets cleaner with a thorough knowledge of hand made carpets cleaning, when carpet/rugs noticeably dirty. Do not have the carpets "dry-cleaned", "steam cleaned" or cleaned by any automated means.

Use of dust mites prevents carpets to accumulate dust.

An old fashioned carpet beater used every few weeks or alternatively a good shaking out doors is invaluable for removing the harmful dust and grit that becomes lodged in the carpet. Always beat the back of the carpet to allow the dirt to fall out from both the back and front of the carpet. Never beat a handmade carpet violently and never beat antique or silk carpets.
